    Captain’s Style Appetisers

    Chimichurri chutney with Amsterdam sour onions, brown bean hummus, vegetable tortilla crisps and home-made bacon flavoured crisps.

    Startlife service: mentoring programme

    StartLife has an active network of more than 30 mentors from the industry plus their own mature startup community which offers hands-on advice.
    They also provide a vast network to their startups
    in all aspects of legal matters, sales, regulatory affairs and more in a 6 month programme free of charge.

    Nstartup: No Fairytales

    No Fairytales carrot and beetroot tortillas consist of 45% vegetables and plenty of fibres to battle obesity. Their products aim to introduce vegetable fibres and contribute towards the recommended daily 4 portions of vegetables. Two wraps provide 14% of the daily recommended amount, even without anything extra on them. Their new product line introduces fermented foods which contribute to a better gut health and overall well-being.

    Chimichurri chutney:

    • 100 grams of fermented chimichurri
    • 25 grams of gherkins
    • 50 grams of Amsterdam sour onions

    Potato crisps:

    • 1 peeled potato
    • 30 grams of Serrano ham


    • Thinly slice the potato.
    • Deep-fry the slices into crunchy crisps (150ºC).
    • Dry the Serrano ham in the oven (170ºC).
    • In a food processor, blend the ham into a fine powder.
    • Sprinkle the bacon powder over the crisps


    Vegetable tortilla crisps:

    • 1 carrot tortilla
    • 1 beetroot tortilla


    • Dry the tortillas in the oven (145ºC) between two sheets of baking paper for 25 minutes.


    The Mushroom Garden

    Startlife service: Incubation space

    StartLife offers incubation space to startups in the Plus Ultra building and to student startups in the StartHub building both on Wageningen Campus.
    Both incubators offer a range of services such as
    Shared research facilities, workshops; one-on-one training sessions; free access to business and legal counselling; and meet-ups with business angels, investors, and experts.


    • 80 grams of MycoCycling mushrooms
    • Salt
    • Olive oil
    • Balsamic Vinegar


    • Season the mushrooms with plenty of olive oil and salt.
    • Sauté the mushrooms in the balsamic vinegar.

    Garnish with: Pea shoots

    Startup: MycoCycling

    MycoCycling produces gourmet mushrooms on local organic waste (e.g. coffee grounds). Subscribed households can pick-up their “mushroom box” weekly at various locations around Wageningen. By doing it this way they create a smaller environmental footprint while producing mushrooms with a stronger aroma and freshness than consumers might be used to. Until now, they converted two server storage containers into innovative growing facilities in which they can cultivate mushrooms all year around.
    Motto: It’s not waste until you waste it!

    With roasted garlic crickets, a mousse of green herbs and smokey BBQ mealworms.

    Startlife service: Knowledge Institute

    StartLife established its Centre of Entrepreneurship in collaboration with Wageningen University & Research to offer a range of courses, trainings and workshops for all startups, from the nascent entrepreneur to the experienced scale-up. Based on the state-of-the-art expertise of Wageningen University & Research we offer specialist expertise on sustainability, investor readiness and prototyping in more than 50 university courses and events annually.


    • 225 grams of self-raising flour
    • 40 grams of butter
    • 10 grams of BBQ flavoured crickets
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 150 grams of buttermilk
    • Salt


    • Add all the ingredients into a bowl and mix to form a soft dough.
    • Roll out the dough and cut into circles using a cookie cutter.
    • Put the scones onto a greased baking tray and egg wash.
    • Bake the scones for 13 minutes in the oven (190ºC).


    • 75 grams of herb cream cheese
    • BBQ meal worms

    startup: TinyFoods

    TinyFoods sells edible insects and insect based products as a sustainable source of protein to consumers in the Netherlands and Belgium. Insects are a sustainable and valuable source of protein which can be easily integrated in a diet as a snack, topping for salads or in baked goods. Insects are also a good source of iron and vitamin B12.

    • 3 sea bass fillets
    • 10 grams of Wasabi4you fresh wasabi
    • 40 grams of thinly sliced carrots
    • 30 grams of thinly sliced spring onions


    • Thinly slice the sea bass.
    • Season the sea bass to taste with grated wasabi
    • Garnish with the carrots and spring onions.

    Robot eggs

    filled with Truffle Flan


    • 4 dl of whipping cream
    • 2 dl of milk
    • 5 eggs
    • 3 egg yolks
    • 10 grams of truffle tapenade
    • Salt


    • Boil the eggs.
    • Cut the eggs in two, along their length, and carefully scoop out the yolks.
    • Mix all of the other ingredients, including the five yolks, together until smooth.
    • Refill the eggs with with the mixture and put them in the oven for 20 minutes (90ºC).

    Startlife service: Investment Capital

    StartLife offers grants such as the annual Young Hero Award to promising student startups, microloans to students and pre-seed capital of up to €80,000.00 in our Stage Gate Incubation Programme from its funds to startups with potential to scale-up. More than 60% of StartLife startups will acquire seed capital through its extensive network of business angels and venture capital funds.

    startup: Livestock Robotics

    Livestock Robotics is a startup from Wageningen University & Research that works on the newest developments in the area of automation and robotics for livestock production. Their extensive knowledge and experience in design, sensor technology, automation, robotics and livestock husbandry makes them the ideal candidate for your robotics development in the livestock industry.

    Mini burgers


    • 4 quinoa burgers
    • 10 grams of sun-dried tomatoes
    • 2 beef tomatoes
    • 5 leaves of basil
    • Olive oil
    • 2 tablespoons of spicy piccalilli
    • 1 tomato and olive baguette


    • Blend the sun-dried tomatoes, basil and olive oil until smooth.
    • Cut the beef tomatoes into small cubes.
    • Mix the tomato cubes and piccalilli into the sun-dried tomato paste.
    • Bake the quinoa burgers on both sides until golden brown.


    StartLife offers workshops, coaching and expertise on sustainable entrepreneurship in collaboration with Wageningen University & Research and the incubator’s partner, the regional development agency Oost NV.


    GreenFood50® develops, produces and sells innovative quinoa ingredients for tasty, sustainable and healthy food for a growing world population. These quinoa ingredients are used in bakery goods, salads, sports nutrition products, meal replacements, soups, healthy snacks, vegetarian products, and gluten-free products.

    In the last 6 years, StartLife’s startups have created more than 815 job opportunities. Many of these startups have collaborated with the university by offering its students internships and thesis opportunities. Many of these interns have been offered a permanent job in the founders’ team, joining experts in sales, IT and technology from all over Europe from StartLife’s network of Wageningen alumni, supported by the Food Valley Expat Center.

    startup: Seamore

    Seamore “I sea pasta” is 100% seaweed. It looks and behaves exactly like tagliatelle pasta. Seamore “sea bacon” is also 100% seaweed and it turns into green crispy bacon when you fry it. The “sea pasta” is a species
    of seaweed that grows in the wild in the Atlantic Ocean.
    By replacing or mixing it with normal pasta you eat less ‘bad’ carbs (sugars), less calories but more fibres, vitamins and minerals. Another bonus is its content of iodine, iron and omega 3.
    Motto: “Some seaweed, we seamore”


    • Thinly slice the potato.
    • Deep-fry the slices into crunchy crisps (150ºC).

    • In a food processor, blend the ham into a fine powder.

    • 1 package of seaweed pasta
    • 4 slices of seaweed bacon
    • 1 red pepper
    • ½ bunch of parsley
    • 50 grams of extra virgin olive oil
    • 4 x 100 grams of organic beef steak
    • 2 cloves of garlic


    Vegetable tortilla crisps:

    • 1 carrot tortilla
    • 1 beetroot tortilla


    • Dry the tortillas in the oven (145ºC) between two sheets of baking paper for 25 minutes.



    Fruit and vegetable sorbets with Waterly tropical water and edible drinking straws.

    startup: Eatme

    Fruitilicious edible straws made of Agar Agar (a seaweed extract). Serve them in cold drinks, milkshakes, juices, cocktails or other drinks. Sip it then eat it!

    Startlife service: INTERNATIONAL

    Nestled in the international community of students and scientists from Wageningen University & Research, StartLife collaborates with multinational companies and in European projects offering startups a full soft-landing support program in the Netherlands. It also maintains an active network of international startups and incubator hubs across Europe with a focus on Mediterranean agriproduction hotspots like Spain, Greece and Lebanon.


    • Mix the champagne with the lyophilized fruits and vegetables
    • Dissolve the sugar in boiling water
    • Mix the champagne with the sugar water and allow to cool.
    • 1 liter of champagne
    • Put the ingredients into the ice cream maker.
    • Put a spoon of sorbet in a glass and pour the Waterly water over it.

    Waterly offers refreshing fruity water that supports a healthy lifestyle at the office and beyond. It is water blended with small doses of fresh fruit and herb juice that enhances the taste experience of drinking water. All pure and fresh ingredients under 7 calories.

    startup: Hacklent

    Hacklent is functional food. It is a powder based on fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts and grains. It forms the basis of their model to feed, fill and enrich people’s bodies 100%. Hacklent sources the best ingredients from all over the world to prepare the best nutritional shakes and delivers them straight to people’s homes.

    StartLife offers a range of financial support to its startup’s from student grants to pre-seed loans. In the StartLife stage-gate programme we prepare and support startup’s for each round of investment and help them to get investor ready.

Due to their innovative capacity we believe that startups are and will be the force behind the food and agri innovations needed to meet the global food demand in the future.

    StartLife is the leading national incubator and accelerator specializing in supporting Dutch food and agri startups and hosts its headquarters on Wageningen Campus. StartHub Wageningen is the student startup incubator of StartLife.

    We are also a member of the Dutch Centres of Entrepreneurship, which promotes entrepreneurship education in the Netherlands.

    StartLife has been working with startups for over ten years. During the last six alone, StartLife has supported over 200 startups that develop technological innovations in the domains of food and agri.
